The National Flag of Sri Lanka symbolizes the country's culture and heritage and embodies the spirit of nationality of its people. It also represents the four virtues of kindness, friendliness, happiness and equanimity. Each element on the National Flag has a distinctive symbolic significance.

Please hoist the national flag to pay tribute to the armed forces that played a major role in the country's freedom struggle.

How to Minimize Electricity Consumption of Computers

People always use varieties of electronic products in their life that use electricity for energy, as computer, air conditioning, washing machine,heaters...etc. So, we suggest few strategies how to minimize energy for Personal Computer users,

1.Use dark colour wall paper & black view screen. Do not use screen server for long period.

2Use portable computer (lap top) more efficient than work station computer or desktop computer.

3.Shut down your computer when you do not use it, especially at night.

4.Use in jet printer than laser printer.

5.Decrease to use monitor, if you can access from remote administrator.

6.Use computer with LCD monitor than CRT, because LCD monitor more efficient energy.

7. Be wise to use monitor computer, 17 inc. monitor use 30 % energy than 15 inc. monitor.

Jetavanaramaya Sri Lanka

It is believed that Jethavanaramaya(Jetavana Stupa) is the work of King Mahasen in the 4 th Century. The dagaba was originally built to a height of 400 feet being the third largest building in the world during that time. The chronicles state that Jetawanaramaya illustrates clearly the way in which the different Buddhist sects which the kings of Anuradhapura followed, and how this had influenced the political affairs of Sri Lanka . The dagaba is stated to have a concrete base and foundations of brick 26 feet deep. When you enter the dagaba from the eastern gateway the Vahalkada has an excellent stele showing a Naga King and an unidentified goddess.

Abayagiriya Sri Lanka

Abayagiri was built by King Vatttagamini in 88 B.C legend says that the King who lost his throne to the south Indians had spent the 14 years in the jungles. While he was fleeing he was jeered by a Jain hermit and on his return to power he destroyed the Jain monastery and around the Jotiya shrine he built a Buddhist monastery. the dagaba itself was the work of king Gajabahu and it reached a height of 370feet and although smaller than the Jetawana Dagaba was the 2 nd largest thupa in the world. In earlier days it was said that the dagaba was built over a foot print of the Buddhe according to Fa hien who visited Sri Lanka in the early 5 th Century A.D.

Over the impression to the North of the Royal City a great Pagoda was built 400 feet in height, decorated with gold and silver and all precious substances combined.

At the southern gateway to the dagaba, the two attendants of the god of wealth, Padmanidhi and Samkanidhi are now enshrined.(source http://www.anandaloka.org)

Ruwanweli Seya Sri Lanka

This Dagoba, constructed in the 2nd century B.C. by King Dutugamunu, Standing 55m (180ft) tall, it was originally even taller is without a doubt the greatest of the of the dagobas at Anuradhapura. The original stupa was modeled in the shape of a pure "water bubble". On the south-west side of the compound there is a small dagoba that has this shape. This may have been used as a model for the great stupa. The larger-than-life statue of the dignified man, respectfully watching the dagoba is considered to be Dutugmunu himself. On the west side of the compound, Basawakkulama tank dates back to the 4th century B.C. and is probably the oldest tank in Sri Lanka. The Thuparama Dagoba, north of the Ruwanweli Seya is considered to be the oldest dagoba in Sri Lanka. It is popularly believed that the collar bone of Lord Buddha is enshrined within this dagoba. Ruwanweli Seya means gem sand. This dagaba or thupa is a dome or relic chamber which is build over sacred relics of the Buddha. The construction of this dagaba was prophesied by Mahinda himself. When King Tissa erected a tall stone pillar for the future building King Dutugemunu decided to build this great thupa on this site. He had consulted several master builders and chose the best out of the submitted tenders. The building was started on the full moon day of May 144B.C. The foundation of Ruwanweli Seya was made of butter clay imported from India ; which was used as cement. Then bricks, rough cement, gum and mountain, crystal were lard with a net work of iron. The foundation was finally plated in copper and then silver the saddert part told by the chronicle is that the King fell sick with a sickness that was to be mortal before the work was completed. Dutugemunu sent for his younger brother Suddha Tissa to complete the work before he died. Because of his brothers weakness Saddha Tissa had a covering made of white cloth by seamstress and therewith was the dome covered. There after he commanded painters to make on it a Buddhist railing and he had the upper portion made of bamboo reeds and he had this thupa painted cunningly with lacquer and imitation gold lying on a palanquin the King was brought to see it and when he beheld the splendid Maha Thupa he became glad at heart that his wish was fulfilled before his death. Elgine ,Talawakele, Sri Lanka

Elgine Falls was located on the Elgin Estate which is 18km from the city of Nuwara Eliya. Take the Lindula Keldeniya road from Talawakele. It is then a 2km trek along a footpath through the jungle, to the fall. Alternatively, take the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ambewella station. Follow the track from the third bridge at Ambewella station for a tortuous 3km walk to the fall.Railway between Nanu Oya and Ambewela offers a panoramic view of the 75 feet high ElginFalls. A convenient place to stay is the Talawakele rest-house, 2km away.

Machan - Sinhala Movie

Machan is a great Sinhala movie by Uberto Pasolini .Now its screening in Sri Lanka. Machan, unlike recent movie like Aba does not ride on the popular war mania. It retells the embarrassing true story of the entire Sri Lanka’s urban poverty. This is a perfect movie you have to watch but has a minor faults. Machan released with the music of Jayasri where six of their songs have been used.

Director Uberto Pasolini entered the film industry in the international marketing and distribution departments of 20th Century Fox before joining David Puttnam's Enigma Films in the early 1980s. His first work for Puttnam was serving as a location scout on such films as Roland Joffe's "The Killing Fields" (1984), "The Frog Prince" (1985) and Joffe's "The Mission" (1986).

Sri Lanka Day in Japan

Sri Lankan Day in Tokyo, Japan organized by the Sri Lankans in Japan with Sri Lankan Airlines annually. It helped Sri Lankans to introduce themselves to the large crowd present. Thousands of people flocked to the annual Sri Lanka Day to experience a colorful festival full of Sri Lankan culture and food.

There were over 50 booths providing unlimited access to everyone to enjoy Sri Lankan products, food, books, records, items of cultural value and Srti Lankan Live music was provided. The lively and rhythmic performances of the entertainers showing their traditional Sri Lankan dances and musical performances was a rare treat for the public.

Fukuroda Falls, Japan

Fukuroda Falls is the One of Japan’s premier waterfalls located in Ibaraki Prefecture in the town of Daigo. The Taki River has its source spring just above the falls. The river flows through the falls and ultimately joins a major Kuji river . The falls consist of 4 sections that spread out the modest flow of water into a shallow sheet some 20 to 30 meters wide, making for a beautiful scene any time of the year.
The width of the falls is 73 m, while the height reaches 120 m. During winter the falls may freeze. The falls are ranked the 3rd in whole Japan among Kegon Falls and Nachi Falls , as the most beautiful waterfalls.

To get there by car, go up the Joban Expressway to the Naka Interchange and exit back towards Tsukuba. Turn right at the first main road and then again right on Route 118 a couple of km up from there. Continue up 118 through Omiya for about 35 km. The falls are to the right just shortly before you get to Daigo Machi.

I had a chance to see this lovely waterfall on July2007. I payed my 100 yen and walked into the tunnel. I walked out on the observation area, and took in the sight. I had been taken completely by surprise.Without the tunnel drilled into the mountainside, it would be impossible to see the falls. I'm trying to figure out how the first people got up there. The valley sides are sheer. Any path would be thin and fragile, and the river bottom is strewn with massive rocks and swift, cold water.

Ushiku Daibutsu, Japan

The Ushiku Daibutsu, located in Ushiku, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, is reportedly one of the tallest Buddhist statue in the world. One hundred meters in height, it is covered with 6-mm-thick bronze plates, and stands on a platform 20 meters high. The statue is more than double the height of the Statue of Liberty.

UD is 50 km northeast of Tokyo and tallest free standing Buddha Statues in Japan.

Inside the statue itself is a four story building, which serves as a kind of museum. The first floor lobby is dark, and as you enter new age music floats toward you from the darkness. In the center of the room a single shaft of light shines from above onto a cauldron of smoking incense. If you walk past that you'll find the elevator to the other floors.
Also on the fourth floor are windows which look out from the buddha's chest on to the adjacent flower garden and small animal park. I didn't get a chance to see it, but apparently there are laser light shows on some evenings.

Challenges of Social Networking in Sri Lanka

This paper described the challenges of Social Networking(SN) in Sri Lanka. SN is a web-based community of people who share interests and activities in the new version of the World Wide Web, Web2.0. These websites often feature user-friendly interface allow users to do more than just retrieve information. Social networking has revolutionized the way we communicate and share information with one another in today's society. Various social networking websites are being used by millions of people everyday on a regular basis and it now seems that social networking is a part of everyday life. Youtube, Blogs, WiKi, Hi5 and Facebook being the most widely used social-networking sites in Sri Lanka and others are Myspace, Flickr, Friendster, Bebo,LinkedIn, ZOHO Twitter and Orkut.

Several of the issues around the use of social networking sites are important from a computer literacy standpoint, attitudes to this form of communication and political & economical backwards. One challenge is getting users to join new social networks when there are few other members. Universities, Schools, and Companies are concerned about the time wasted in managing social network profiles and less bandwidth of Internet connection in Sri Lanka, they have banned SN sites.

Almost four in 10 internet users in Sri Lanka who are members of social networking sites would change the personal information they have put online, according to research. The research also showed that almost half of internet users aged 14 to 35 who were members of social networking sites and 61% of all internet users were members of social networking sites such as Facebook, Hi5, WiKi and Blogs.

A preliminary measure of this research is that no-limitation of SN sites is needed. The bandwidth of the system is not enough for the amount of requests of using the Internet, a kind of Internet usage is needed. The broadband Internet facilities in Sri Lanka are sufficiently developing. The Universities in Sri Lanka currently have over 10Mbps Internet connectivity and about 60% high schools in Sri Lanka have the Internet facility. People’s engagement with SN, understand people’s use of sites and exploring the more technical aspects of SN sites is needed. We must give students the chance to process learning and as a result better understand the content and educating the community about SN.

Horton Plains Sri Lanka

Horton Plains is Sri Lanka’s only montane national parks, and the only one in which visitors are permitted to tour on foot. The second & third highest mountains of the country namely Kirigalpotta & Thotupola respectively are found within the borders of the park.

The panoramic scenic beauty of the hill country could be witnessed within the park. The famous "World's End" and "Bakers Falls" are major attractions within the Park.

Leopard, Sri lankan Sambar Deer & wild boar are the most common large mammals in Horton Plains. Endemic Bear Monkey, Rusty- Spotted and Fishing cats, Otter, Black napped hare and Giant Squirrel are among other mammals. Many species of endemic & threatened rats & shrews are also found in the park.

Aberdeen Waterfall Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is blessed with innumerable waterfalls. Aberdeen waterfall is found below the Castlereigh Reservoir on the grounds of the former Aberdeen Estate.

This waterfall, which attain the impressive height of 322 feet Horsetail type gorgeous waterfall in Sri Lanka. This is near Ginigathhena town & 2km walk from the village. The sweetest thing is we guided by 2 Dogs.

When you travel along the Colombo-Hatton highway, turn at Ginigathhena junction and drive along the road up to village & then 2km foot walk to see Aberdeen Fall.
